DETAILS
Dates: August 18 - September 3, 2011

Approximate Cost: $1,900 - $2,900* plus airfare (*based on double occupancy; final cost dependent on number of participants and euro conversion rate at time of final payment)

Visit one of the most isolated regions of the world: Kamchatka, a stunning mountain paradise located in the far eastern region of Russia. Pass through the most active volcanic zone of the peninsula, surrounded by nine of Kamchatka’s highest volcanoes. There are more than 160 volcanoes on the peninsula, 29 of which are active. The main attractions of Kamchatka are volcanic calderas, stone sculpture “parks” and lakes in craters, geysers, and mineral springs, all in pristine condition. The volcanoes of Kamchatka are a World Heritage Site.

Supported by 4/6WD bus, this tour passes through the most active volcanic zone of the peninsula and along a high-mountain (1000 meters above sea level) plateau, surrounded by Kamchatka’s highest volcanoes. You will have an opportunity to walk through the ash-cinder plain resulting from the Northern vent eruption, formed only 20 years ago. We will climb three volcanoes, all of which are still active. There will be plenty of wildlife: Foxes, Stellar Eagles, and multiple possibilities to see the legendary Kamchatka Brown Bear.

We will have opportunities to learn about the local and indigenous peoples of Kamchatka. We will meet the Evens people in the settlement of Esso, where we will be entertained with an Even Folk Concert. On our last day, will be the guests of a local farmer at his yurt for dinner and some lively Russian folk music.

Lodging will be in hotels, cabins, and tents.

The trip cost includes all Kamchatka lodging and meals (except extra beverages), ground transportation, guide fees in Kamchatka, and CMC fee. The final cost may vary slightly depending on final number of participants and currency exchange rates (the package is priced in euros).

Not included in the price: Round trip airfare to Petropavlovsk, Russian visa, beverages, rented equipment such as sleeping bag and pad, airport departure taxes, tips, and personal spending money. Travel insurance is not included but highly recommended.

Hiking level: Participants should be capable of Difficult B/Easy C hikes. The volcano climbs are non-technical; however, participants should have adequate stamina to do multiple climbs on consecutive days of up to 2,900 feet in elevation gain.
